The Power Play The grand ballroom of the Ritz was alive with opulence.
Crystal chandeliers glimmered like stars, casting a golden glow over the room as Chicagos elite mingled.
The clink of champagne glasses and soft hum of classical music filled the air, underscoring whispered conversations about wealth, power, and scandal.
At the center of it all stood Alexander Hartley, every inch the image of success.
His tailored midnight-blue tuxedo accentuated his broad shoulders, and his signature smirk radiated confidence.
Beside him was Vivienne, her arm looped possessively through his.
Her gold gown sparkled under the lights, and her diamond necklace was just as dazzling.
Smile, darling, Vivienne cooed, leaning into him.
Were the power couple everyone wants to be.
Alexander glanced at her, amused.
Everyone already knows were untouchable.
And he believed it.
Hartley Enterprises was thriving, dominating both the tech and luxury markets.
His name was synonymous with ambition, influence, and wealth.
The betrayal of his former wife, Elena, was a distant memory.
Her departure had been a bump in the road, nothing more.
As he sipped his whiskey, a voice nearby whispered, I cant believe theyre engaged now.
Do you think he ever hears from… her? Alexanders smirk faltered, but only for a moment.
He didnt need to turn around to know who her referred to.
Elena Hartleythe woman who had walked out of his life five years ago without so much as a goodbye.
He hadnt heard from her, and he preferred it that way.
But as if summoned by the mention of her name, a hush fell over the room.
The soft murmur of voices dwindled into silence, replaced by an undercurrent of tension.
Is that… Elena Hartley? someone whispered.
No, it cant be.
She vanished years ago.
Alexanders brow furrowed as he turned toward the commotion.
His breath caught in his throat.
She stood at the entrance to the ballroom, poised and breathtaking in an emerald-green gown that hugged her figure perfectly.
The fabric shimmered with each step she took, the thigh-high slit revealing long, toned legs.
Her dark hair, once so simple and understated, was now swept into an elegant updo, with soft curls framing her striking features.
The shy, dutiful wife he had once known was gone.
In her place was a woman who commanded attention with every move, her confidence radiating like a force field.
Elena Beaumont.
That name had surfaced in whispers recently, attached to mysterious business ventures and sudden power plays in the European markets.
But seeing her here, in the flesh, was a reality Alexander hadnt been prepared for.
She looks… different, someone murmured.
Different? She looks like royalty, another replied.
Vivienne stiffened beside Alexander, her grip tightening on his arm.
Why is everyone staring? she asked, her tone laced with irritation.
She turned to follow their gazes and froze.
No, she hissed.
It cant be.
Elena, Alexander murmured, his voice barely audible.
She was making her way through the crowd now, each step deliberate, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
Conversations sputtered and died as she passed, leaving a wake of stunned silence.
Alexanders mind raced.
Where had she been all these years? How had she transformed into this? And, most importantly, why was she here? Elena, he repeated, louder this time, as if saying her name would break the spell.
Finally, she stopped a few feet away from him.
Her gray eyesnow sharper, more piercinglocked onto his, and the faintest smirk tugged at her lips.
Alexander, she greeted, her voice smooth and rich, like velvet laced with steel.
Its been a while.
Vivienne regained her composure, stepping forward.
What are you doing here, Elena? she snapped, her voice dripping with disdain.
This is a private event.
Elenas gaze flicked to Vivienne, her smirk widening.
Oh, Vivienne.
I didnt recognize you without your usual seat at someone elses table.

The jab was subtle, but it hit its mark.
Viviennes face flushed with anger, and she opened her mouth to retort, but Alexander placed a hand on her arm, silencing her.
Elena, he said again, his tone firmer now.
What do you want? What do I want? Elena repeated, tilting her head as if considering the question.
I suppose I wanted to see how things turned out for you.
Its been so long, after all.
Her gaze swept over him and Vivienne, lingering just long enough to make Vivienne shift uncomfortably.
Then she leaned in, close enough for only Alexander to hear.
Did you miss me, darling? Next Chapter
